Gordon Borg was born in Malta in 1975. From the age of 7 he showed an interest in art and began drawing. After finishing compulsory schooling, he began art studies at the Malta School of Art in Valletta and while developing his artistic skills under the tutorship of Paul Buhagiar and Alfred Briffa he sat for, and obtained, the Advanced Level in Art.
Subsequently he studied at the University of Malta and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Geography. Following his graduation, Gordon continued to read and inform himself about the History of Art while extending his interests in the visual arts – drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, graphic design and photography. During his time in the banking sector at the Bank of Valletta in Malta, he had the opportunity to meet several Maltese renowned artists who exhibited their works at the Bank, while his participation in the Art social club activities for BOV staff offered him the chance to get closer to art through his participation in the collective art exhibition and photography exhibitions in 2008 and 2009. This led to his second solo art exhibition in 2011 inspired by cubism. He began to dedicate more time to art and eventually decided to devote himself to this completely.
His art DNA is a combination of graphical communication and an inspiration from the works of Pablo Picasso and George Braque. Gordon engages himself in constant exploration, experimentation and learning. Recently, research about abstract art led him to focus on Abstract Cubism – which Apollinaire in 1912 described as Orphism. Other inspirations are sourced from Henry Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Theo Van Doesburg, Rose Piper, František Kupka, and Robert and Sonia Delaunay. Recently he embarked on a new artistic style with wood sculpture.
In some of the paintings Gordon has revisited previous works. His art has been labelled by Attard (2011) as “a blend of the Cubism idiom with a penchant for colourful and primitive naiveté.”
Gordon Borg’s work is intriguing, inspired by the great artists he admires. However, it is expressed in his unique style.
